The Role and Advantages of Ultraviolet Disinfection
1. Ultraviolet (UV) light effectively kills bacteria and algae (such as Legionella) in circulating cooling water by destroying their DNA and RNA, without developing resistance (e.g., to biocides/disinfectants).
2. Safe operation and easy operation. (Less chemical storage and dosing, reducing hazardous operations.)
3. Lower operating costs and maintenance frequency. (Adjustable UV lamp power, exceptionally long lamp life.)
4. No salt introduction, no pH fluctuation, and reduced corrosion rates.
5. Chemical-free wastewater, requiring no further treatment, is environmentally friendly.

Process Design Analysis
Research has shown that cooling towers continuously absorb pollutants from the air, introducing large amounts of bacteria and suspended solids into the circulating water and providing nutrients for microorganisms. Small suspended solids (5 microns or smaller) are adherent contaminants that can adhere to cooling towers and heat exchangers, reducing cooling system performance. A 0.04-inch scale layer can reduce heat transfer efficiency by up to 30%.

Typical UV treatment process flow chart for circulating cooling water
UV equipment can be installed in circulating cooling water systems using either immersion or pipeline designs. A filtration system can be installed upstream of pipeline-type UV disinfection equipment to remove suspended solids, improving sterilization efficiency and reducing the risk of scaling and sludge formation.
In addition, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) can be added intermittently or periodically. UV/H₂O₂ stimulates active free radicals (·OH) to form advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), enhancing the oxidation of organic matter (COD) and the inactivation of resistant microorganisms. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes under UV radiation without residue, and corrosion is prevented by controlling the hydrogen peroxide dosage and monitoring the residual amount.

ONYX UV Products
ONYX-ZL Series UV Disinfection Equipment

🔹 Pipeline installation with flange connection, compact footprint;
🔹 Built-in power adjustment function;
🔹 Corrosion-resistant flow components;
🔹 Built-in online mechanical cleaning to prevent casing scaling;
🔹 UV dose monitoring for easy maintenance;
🔹 24-hour continuous and stable operation with zero UV leakage for high safety.
Ultraviolet (UV) sterilization is not only more efficient and thorough, but also produces no byproducts. This reduces maintenance costs and is environmentally friendly. The total bacterial count is consistently below 1000 CFU/mL, reducing equipment corrosion rates, the amount of scale inhibitors used, and the frequency of cleaning.
