Traditional swimming pool and aquarium disinfection relies primarily on chlorine-based disinfectants. While these offer sustained disinfection capabilities and are relatively inexpensive, they can react with organic matter in the water to produce irritating disinfection byproducts such as chloramines, which can cause a pungent odor in the pool and potentially cause eye, skin, and respiratory irritation to swimmers.
Ultraviolet (UV) and ozone (O3) disinfection and oxidation technologies have attracted widespread attention and adoption in the swimming pool industry due to their high efficiency, broad-spectrum bactericidal properties, environmentally friendly oxidation capabilities, and the potential to significantly reduce the use of chemical disinfectants and their byproducts.
UV disinfection, as a physical disinfection method, uses specific wavelengths of light to destroy microbial DNA without leaving any chemical residues.
Ozone, as a strong oxidant, rapidly kills various microorganisms and improves water sensory properties. These two technologies represent the development direction of modern swimming pool disinfection, aiming to provide a safer, healthier, and more comfortable swimming experience.

Special Considerations for Getting Rid of the "Chlorine Odor" in Indoor Swimming Pools:
· Indoor swimming pools are relatively enclosed spaces with limited ventilation. Chloramines (primarily monochloramine, dichloramine, and trichloramine) formed by the reaction of chlorine with nitrogen-containing organic matter (such as urea in sweat and urine) introduced by swimmers can easily accumulate in the air, irritating the eyes and respiratory mucosa of swimmers and staff. In severe cases, they can cause health problems such as asthma.
· Medium-pressure UV light, due to its broad spectrum, covers wavelengths that effectively photodecompose various forms of chloramine. Trichloramine (NCl3), the most irritating chloramine, is significantly decomposed by medium-pressure UV light, significantly improving indoor air quality, eliminating pungent odors, and enhancing swimming comfort.
Preventing Greening in Outdoor Swimming Pools: Special Considerations for Algae
Outdoor swimming pools are directly exposed to the elements and are subject to a variety of external factors, including sunlight (which promotes algae growth), rain (which carries pollutants and alters pH), windblown sand and fallen leaves, and air pollutants. Algae control presents a significant challenge.
Ozone's strong oxidizing properties effectively inhibit and kill algae, effectively breaking down natural organic matter and pollutants in water, helping to maintain water clarity. Through its strong oxidizing properties, ozone effectively breaks down organic precursors (such as urea and amino acids) in water, thereby reducing chloramine formation at the source.
